Why does Fedora not provide a coloured PS1 by default?

Longer version: why does what I suppose is a Fedora 27 server edition image I had just installed at my VM provider not greet me with a coloured PS1 by default? This is a system that has no graphical user interface installed, therefore I assume we are meant to use it via an ordinary secure shell connection. Having PS1 in colours by default would greatly help everyone with finding where some program's output starts and ends.

What makes you think that this would help everyone? I am happy having no colors as default and configure such things as needed.

My guess - though I'm only a long-time fedora user, nothing else, would be that it depends on each individual's consoles and system capabilities. Generally, CLI people have their own, custom PS1 variable pretty early on (I do) and I configure it the way I like to see it - which irritates others. For example, I'm partial to old greenscreens - and I really hate red/orange fonts. But I know people who love them.

The easiest way is to provide a default - the bland, normal PS1 - and let you change it to what fits you. Doesn't make sense to alienate someone when the fix is pretty easy (at least to me).

Welcome to ask.fedora. The probable answer to your question is that most people don't want a colored prompt and those who do all have their own ideas as to what color it should be. (Oddly enough, that doesn't stop the Fedora devs from making color ls the default.) If you do want color, you can always edit .bashrc to give it whatever color you want, and even give every server a unique color to make them even easier to tell apart.
