Hello all,

I have a laptop with a 4k screen and optimus intel/nvidia graphics. I installed the nvidia drivers from the rpmfusion repo and have been happily using them for a while. Everything seems to work right out of the box including prime synchronization.

Sometimes, for battery life savings I would like to disable the nvidia gpu and re enable the nouveau driver. I have followed the instructions at https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA#Sw...betweennouveau.2Fnvidia .

My issue arises because after rebooting and removing those two boot parameters gnome3 freezes after log in. Everything loads up properly but once I enter my password I just get a frozen gray screen. I cant switch to a console or do anything besides hold down my power button to power my machine off.

I don't understand, for saving battery life you use the intel igpu, that's what optimus technology is all about.

I'm unable to load gnome3 while using the intel graphics. The computer freezes right after I enter my password.

The Nouveau driver is still running the NVidia GPU and is likely to use more power since it might lack some of the power saving functions of the proprietary driver.

Nvidia Optimus is unable to completely power down dGPU.

I assume that if you have a laptop with 4k screen then your GPU is one of newer ones, which won't work well under nouveau unless Nvidia finally delivers signed firmware blobs to support at least power management.

If you want to be able to save power by using only Intel GPU and get full performance from Nvidia GPU, use Bumblebee.
