Hardware Issues with Fedora 28 on Lenovo P52

As I got my hands on a soon to be released Lenovo P52 I thought I'd evaluate how the current fedora stable (28) works on this nice piece of new hardware. This turned out to be rather suboptimal which is why I want to share my findings here hoping to (gradually) find solutions to them:

  • nouveau graphics driver not working in default hybrid-graphics mode:
    • problem-description: the p52 provides a hybrid graphics stack consisting of the CPU-integrated GPU (Intel UHD Graphics 630) and a nvidia quadro p2000 mobile. Booting from cd is not possible as described in comment 20 of a similar bug-description.
    • solution found so far: disable hybrid gfx-stack in bios/uefi (set to 'discrete graphics'), this will lead to a basically usable system with gnome hogging all CPU-ressources. install/update to latest kernel and install proprietary nvidia driver (i used the ones from negativo17's repo which worked just fine for me). Afterwards, re-enabling the hybrid stack seems not to cause any more issues but I havent found out if the CPU-integrated graphics unit is used at all or how this affects battery-life.

  • trackpad not working (but recognized?)
    • problem-description: dmesg lists a Trackpoint (ETPS/2 Elantec as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input6) which is working fine as well as a Touchpad (ETPS/2 Elantec as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input5) which is NOT working at all. In settings -> Devices -> Mouse & Touchpad it is enabled, re-enabling does not work. At a later stage, dmesg repeatedly reports that "psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 6"
    • solution found so far: none

  • thunderbolt not working (but recognized?)
    • problem-description: the device provides 2 USB-C sockets which should both provide thunderbolt 3. lspci sometimes lists serveral Thunderbolt 3 PCI bridges and a "System peripheral" device named "Intel Corporation JHL7540 Thunderbolt 3 USB Controller [Titan Ridge 4C 2018]" but they not always show up. In the settings app (Devices -> Thunderbolt), "No Thunderbolt support" (plus further descriptive Text "Thunderbolt could not be detected ...") is reported.
    • solution found so far: none

  • untested components:
    • smartcard-reader

has anybody found a viable solution to any of the mentioned issues so far?


  • UPDATE: further tested components:
    • hdmi and mini-display-port seem to work correctly both (also simultaneously) with nouveau (out-of-the-box) as well as with the proprietary NVidia driver v396.24.
    • webcam: colored webcam works out of the box (gets mapped to /dev/video0. it remains uncertain if there is really a second IR module installed or if this is just a dummy. there is a device /dev/video1 listed but opening it with gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src device=/dev/video1 ! xvimagesink fails with Device '/dev/video1' is not a capture device.
    • screen-brightness-keys (F5/F6) do not seem to work.

I have a Yoga 920, which also has thunderbolt. As the thunderbolt chip consumes a lot of power when producing thunder and lightning, it is often put into some sort of low-power state where it doesn't even show up as a existing. I expect that that is what you are seeing. But there are also problems with Thunderbolt under Linux.

This guy clearly has no clue. Thunderbolt is always undetectable when it is not needed, on every computer. Either plug in devices, or "echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/wmi/devices/86CCFD48-205E-4A77-9C48-2021CBEDE341/force_power" to reveal them, find in "lspci -vt".

Thunderbolt is just a bridge, which takes PCIe and DisplayPort from A->B. It is not like USB where the controller actually appears to the computer. The Thunderbolt controller is just implementing PCI bridges, and is transparent. It shows its NHI on one of the PCI busses, presumably to take commands to control the Thunderbolt links.

As for the graphics, you can just blacklist the modules of integrated or dedicated, and "sudo update-initramfs -u". But disabling one or the other in BIOS could be good. But then again, the OP did not even define what the problem is, beyond a vague description that sounds like a statement more than a problem statement. Edit: sounds like the problem is "out of date kernel on boot CD" which is a problem with the Live CD, and not the hardware.

OP, please update kernel to 4.18-rc4 (important) from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/... and you might need to blacklist evbug. Then please do "echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/bus/wmi/devices/86CCFD48-205E-4A77-9C48-2021CBEDE341/forcepower" and then post following: a) Output of "lspci" and "lspci -vt" b) "dmesg > somefile" and post contents of somefile c) hwinfo with the Thunderbolt controller confirmed active d) "sudo dd if=/sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/0-0/nvmactive0/nvmem of=/path/to/nvm-titan-ridge-lenovo-p52.dd" and post / attach the binary file "nvm-titan-ridge-lenovo-p52.

If Fedora has no deb package support then (from easiest to hardest) either a) Uninstall Fedora and install Ubuntu b) Install packages on another machine running Ubuntu and then copy over /boot/vmlinuz…. and /boot/initrd.img…. and /lib/modules/….4.18rc4.... and then "sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" c) Manually extract the deb files and install aforementioned things d) Do the Arch Linux method of compiling and installing dpkg, and overriding / ignoring dependencies to install the debs manually
