Server "silently" dying

asked 2018-07-12 07:28:16 -0500

Since I upgraded my FC28 to 4.17.2 (now at 4.17.3) my server just appears to "stop". I find a repeated message on my console saying: "bstrong textad: scheduling from the idle thread". There is NOTHING in syslog though, there is nothing immediately prior to the "hang" that's relevant:

Jul 11 02:11:55 localhost NetworkManager[901]: <info> [1531271515.1691] policy: set 'hawkbridge' (wlp0s26u1u5) as default for IPv6 routing and DNS Jul 12 13:13:24 localhost kernel: microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0x1f, date = 2018-02-07

So the first message is the last one recorded - then there was nothing until I rebooted (i.e. the second message).

Other than the message on the console I have nothing to go on. I have obviously googled, but not found much to help me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I suspect it's something to do with my wireless USB network card (a TP-LINK TL-WN722N) but am at a bit of a loss as to what I can do about it.

The problem only appear with the recent kernel versions.

regards Mark

I have seen freezes (both just the network and the whole system) with a similar USB network card because the drivers are in a very bad shape. You may want to try another network card, preferably one with good driver support. I have made good experience with PCI-based Intel cards.
