Fedora 28: Blank gray screen after login fresh install

I recently acquired a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 7000) with an Nvidia Geforce 1050 gtx card. I followed the standard installation procedures and dual booted with my windows 10. However when I try to login to the Fedora installation using my credentials I just get a blank grey screen with only the cursor which sometimes freezes. I have tried using the ctrl+alt+F2 combination to get to a tty but it doesnt work, nothing changes. Also tried to change to Gnome classic which also did not work.

Kindly assist if you have any idea on how to debug the issue.

Could be an issue with graphics drivers in combination with either Wayland / X or the display manager. Have you installed the proprietary NVidia drivers? Which desktop environment are you trying to login to (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, ...)?

It's an issue with Nvidia GPU.

Boot with nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter, then you should be able to login. Now you've got three options:

  1. use Bumblebee
  2. in BIOS disable Optimus and install Nvidia driver (Nvidia GPU will be always active, so don't expect long battery runs)
  3. in BIOS disable Nvidia GPU, you'll be using only Intel GPU, no need for any additional drivers, that way you get long battery runs and slow GPU performance.

Bumblebee is probably the best option, 2 and 3 are unavailable on some laptops. For now Wayland will only work with 3 (in other options you have to use X.Org, it should happen automatically).
