Tried different searches. One suggestion was to install gddm. Package was not installed, so I installed ir. After reboot, I get the familiar user and password screens. But GUI displays a blue pattern. No icons and nothing to click. Transfer to a console screen and log in. Then I enter startx. That sort of works. I was using Cinammon, but this screen has none of what I am looking for. I can do a search for a program, if I know what to search for. Aby suggestions on what to do next?

what's your graphics hardware !! do you have hybrid graphics ?? for test try to reinstall GDM and gnome-shell, try to reproduce the issue starting your system using older kernel available in your system .

If you get a graphics blue screen, try reverse clicking on it and see if you get a dialog which allows altering the display resolution, number of monitors, etc.
