You better backup your important data and then perform a clean install of F28 or F29.

florian, this is not an option for me, I need to go step by step

eliassal gravatar imageeliassal ( 2019-01-07 15:22:35 -0600 )edit

The reason is that I have a couple of apps which needs a lot of reconfiguration which I want to avoid at any price

Then, try to remove the packages that cause the conflicts above, and retry the upgrade process.

I issues systemctl set-default graphical.target rebooted and still getting the command line. I issued startx, Gui was displayed, rebooted, again no graphical logging qui, any idea what is missing? Thanks

If you are upgrading via dnf, it may be a problem if there is a lot of difference from the latest version.

In particular, if complex service programs and specific library dependencies are important, there is no guarantee that they will work perfectly with their respective distribution characteristics.

If you have a lot of distro differences, I think it's more stable to try the necessary setup after a regular installation.

Please note that even if the distinctions are small, there may be problems with system dependencies and complex services, and even if the previous system is stable, the latest operating system may not be fully compatible with the existing hardware.

Therefore, it is preferable to proceed with general installation as much as possible.

Tell me about your graphics hardware information?

OK, I finished by reinstalling a fresh new F29 but I am having a problem with accesing the GUI with startx. In spite of the fact that I enabled GDM, when I reboot I always get the command line not the gui logon nice page. I did install xfce-desktop environment and was able to enter a gui session as root using startx but when I try to use startx with my user account (not root), it doesnt work. What is missing?

You can try installing another GUI to add insufficient libraries and services. Install GNOME and KDE, use switchdesk to apply the desired GUI, and tell me how it works.?

I did, both KDE and GNOME, nothing changed, always when rebooting or logging out I get the command line, root can do startx but noy another user. I tried, when i use my account "sudo startx", it opens the desktop but I see root in the right upper corner

@eliassal: I had that problem with Fedora 27. This question and answer resolved the problem permanently for me.

You should check the ownership of the user account. If you have root ownership for normal user file application, ordinary users can not access it.

Do it from 21 to 22, then from 22 to 23, and so on

In general, it's safe to skip one version, unless thee's a major change, such as when Fedora started using systemd.

Hello.

Do as florian wrote, try to remove the packages that cause the conflicts above, and retry the upgrade process.

I was having the same problem here a few minutes ago, and I was trying to figure it out how to solve it, when I had saw this topic at this forum.

I did as florian just said, and it worked fine for me.

Give it a try!
