I have downloaded Xonotic and each time I want to play that game I have to open Terminal and execute sh command to play said game. Is there anything I can do to add shortcut to thelauncher, so I only have to click that shortcut and it will execute that commands for me and run Xonotic?

Yes, You can create a ".desktop" file in "~/.local/share/applications", then the specified "Icon" Should show up in the Gnome Shell Menu ( You may, or may not need to reload the shell: "alt-F2, r <enter>" )

This is for example my "Unreal Tournament 2004" launcher:

$ cat ~/.local/share/applications/ut2004.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Unreal Tournament 2004
Comment=Unreal Tournament 2004
Exec=/home/joe/Games/ut2004/ut2004
Icon=/home/joe/Downloads/ut2004.png
Terminal=false

Or my "Armory" Launcher:

$ cat ~/.local/share/applications/armory.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Bitcoin Armory
Comment=Bitcoin Armory
Exec=python /home/joe/Git/BitcoinArmory/ArmoryQt.py
Icon=/home/joe/Git/BitcoinArmory/img/armory_logo_h72.png
Terminal=false

etcetera etcetera

Excellent explanation, thanks. (Whispers to noobs: Bear in mind that most of the time you need to be root to write there. If you do not have cat you may very well use gedit or another text editor but launch it from a terminal window where you are root, so you will have the permissions to save.)

(Whispers to giampaolo: Saying that "most of the time you must be root" is not a good advice at all, especially writing files like an .desktop that you can write without any root permission because, well, it's your environment. Second cat isn't a text editor as gedit. Anyway, thank you domg, it's very well explained.

hello pals, How customize the blurred icon on "window switcher" (ALT+TAB) . I copied the icons to all folders in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/[NxN]/apps and in the popcorn-time.desktop file I only typed Icon=popcor-time.png but that not fix the problem.
