Hi, I respectully ask you for help, I have spent over a day trying to figure this out. I will spare you the details.

Would you please: Direct me to comprehensive beginner level documentation on how to install a wifi driver. Preferably official. (Sorry, there is no search field in the [documentation]

I was pointed to and the topic is not covered.)

Or

Please provide instructions considering I am new to Fedora.

My best bet and problem description:

Wifi is not working. I installed Fedora 20. Ran:

su -c 'yum update'

This in the Netwrok controller in question:

lspci | grep Network

...
04:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01)

From Realtek, I downloaded and extracted in the Downloads dir the [driver file]

Following [these]

instructions, I ran:

yum install gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers patch make

Still based on the link / instructions above, I tried to:

make

This resulted in errors (did not compile).

And also tried to

./compile

before make, following one of the comments. But there is no compile.

Your help is much appreciated!

And I cannot post links in this forum, so my post looks like a mess.

And the terminal session:

But you didn't post the most important parte, which is the output of the make command, the 'errors' that you said. Please, put the full output next time.

You mention Fedora 20 - it might be worth trying Fedora 20. F18 will stop receiving updates soon.

I tried compiling it myself on Fedora 20 (3.12.5-302.fc20.x86_64).

It failed.

Started searching for reasons. Found this.

Someone made a git repository with the driver source code patched for Ubuntu 13.10 (which according to the release notes is kernel 3.11).

So I did this:

git clone https(colon)//github.com/FreedomBen/rtl8188ce-linux-driver
cd rtl8188ce-linux-driver/
git checkout ubuntu-13.10
make

It compiled without issue on my machine. I did not actually install it to test, because I do not have that hardware.

Hope it helps.

EDIT:

In the git clone change it from https(colon) to https:. I apparently do not have the karma to post links.

Also, 'Found this.' is supposed to be a link to this http(colon)//askubuntu.com/questions/367587/unable-to-compile-realtek-rtl8188ce-driver-on-ubuntu-13-10

Following the instruction of fedora doc solved my slow and irregular connection problem.

Here is the doc.

The doc mention to Deselect the Controlled by NetworkManager I'm on fedora 19 instead of doing that i just reset the connection with the following
Network setting --> parameters of the desired network connection --> reset --> forget

Yes, I have been trying F20 from the get go, live and installed. It was only when I tried and installed F18, that I managed to get the wifi to work. And now it is broken again after the kernel and selinux-policy updates...
