Unable to scan - Brother DCP-J4110DW

I just got a Brother DCP-J4110DW printer/scanner and it's connected via USB to my F20 desktop.

I've downloaded and installed the rpms that Brother Inc. provides from here

The problem is that I can print but I cannot scan.

The scanner shows up in Simple Scan but when I press scan it just says "Failed to scan - unable to connect to scanner". But I can see it in preferences for Simple Scan. I've also tried XSane and Gimp, but with the same result. journalctl -f doesn't show anything when I try to scan.

Any advice? How could I investigate this further?

I have created a udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/65-sane.rules to allow a normal user access to the scanner:

# Brother
   ATTR{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

This should be done by the download from the brother site brother-udev-rule-type1-1.0.0-1.noarch.rpm but I found that this did not work. The installation instructions do tell you what to do for older releases of Fedora, the manual instructions work for Fedora 20. See

Late to the table but I had this and while there may be a more permanent fix I also found that this also worked from the terminal.

sudo simple-scan

I just realized that I need to be root to be able to scan, which is quite bad. Trying to figure out if there's any way around it.
