A child was messing round on this laptop and set random words on all the proxy settings on the 'network proxy' connection and now when I try to do yum update it says

Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from rpmfusion-nonfree: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/releases/20/Everything/x86_64/os/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] curl#6 - "Could not resolve host: xjsx sjxbwjxbwsx"

I already deleted all entries in the proxy settings, changed it to 'None' and ran unset http_proxy

Is there another command that might help me to reset the proxy settings?

Did you check Network Manager settings? Did you reset https_proxy as well? Do you have proxy settings in "dnf.conf"?

Test by going to the URL using curl - or other means. If you have a global proxy problem everything is going to see it. If it's just yum/dnf that has a problem, then it's most likely a configuration setup for these tools.

I ended up solving this problem, but unfortunately failed to record the exact steps I took. From my Google History I can see that I used this other Stack Overflow answer which may be a good starting point for anyone else looking

It might be a good idea to create a different user for the child, and make sure that the account isn't in the wheel group so that access to sudo is disabled. And, change your own password to keep the child from switching to your account. This will prevent any further episodes as it requires either sudo access or the root password (You may need to change that as well.) to modify important settings, such as proxies.
