Freeze before login phase

Hello,

About a year ago I was on Fedora, it worked great (had a few issue but they didn't prevent me from using it) and all and after changing my HDD to an SSD I didn't bother to reinstall linux on it. 1 month ago I decided to reinstall linux and gave Ubuntu a try because there was Fedora 17 coming a bit later and I didn't want to set up Fedora knowing that maybe the update would break things. All that little background to show up that I had no big problem before (on Ubuntu it worked flawlessly).

Then I installed Fedora17 and things aren't as smooth as I hoped :

9 times out of 10 the startup will fail. Just after the "Ramdisk loading" there is 3 cases of freeze that I observed :

  • the Fedora logo on a grey background appear and it freeze there
  • the wallpaper show up with the login box at a wrong small resolution and freeze
  • sometimes (but that's more rare) the wallpaper show at the good resolution with no login box and freeze (by freezing I mean that everything but the mouse is completely unresponsive and I have to reboot with the button).

When the login is successful (1 time out of 10) everything works fine except :

  • Sometime it freezes randomly on certain tasks (happened to me one time changing the resolution, another changing the fonts with gnome-tweak and a last time using a browser)
  • The computer won't detect/permit the good resolutions for the screen I put vertically (only allow 1024800 and 800640)

I'm guessing these problems come from my GPU and drivers but I have absolutely no clues at what to do and why it worked before with the same hardware (has Fedora 17 broken something?).

Any help would be appreciated!

My setup is the following :

  • GPU : AMD Radeon 5870HD
  • RAM : 6Gb
  • CPU : Intel Core i7
  • Screens : 1 horinzontal 19201080 and 1 vertical 1650(...)

The hardware is a little bit older than 2 years.
