How do I add or remove icons from the application menu in Gnome 3 or Cinnamon?

For example if I waned to add an icon for a command line application like irssi or wanted to remove a program from the list but leave it installed on the system.

To add a launcher for your user only, put it's desktop file in

~/.local/share/applications/

(~ being your home directory). To add a launcher for all users, put the desktop file in

/usr/share/applications

If you want to learn how to create a desktop file, you can look at the ones already installed on your computer (in /usr/share/applications) or read the desktop file specification.

As for removing icons, I am not familiar with any good method. You can delete the relevant files from /usr/share/applications, but they will come back when you update your system.

Also, I am not aware of a graphical way (that works with Fedora 16) of doing this.

Hi thanks for your post. I tried adding a .desktop file in ~/local/share/applications but no icons appears - what can I do?
