I have just installed fedora 17 by upgrading from Fedora 15 on an old Linux format coverdisk. I would like to burn an iso image that I have downloaded, but the cd/dvd burner software supplied with Fedora 17 does not seem to work according to the forums the Gnome burner software is better. I installed the Gnome software, it appeared to work, but when I tried to boot from it nothing happened, and the system booted into Fedora. I then tried to read the cd on a friends machine and confirmed that there was nothing on the disk. I then noticed that when i put a cd in the drive it did not appear in the menu, so now I have two problems,

  1. I cannot see the dvd rom drive,
  2. I cannot burn dvd/cd's

How do I fix this?

Thanks for your help

Assuming you are using brasero:

Brasero has a poor user interface; it shows the text "success" and "100% Done" very early in the burning process. I have, more than once, taken discs out too soon and been surprised they didn't work. You have to wait until it says something along the lines of "Data DVD successfully burnt" and ejects the disc.

I've used the default GNOME dvd burner and it works just fine. Are you sure your dvd drive is working properly?

After inserting a blank dvd, to check it, in a terminal, run:

dvd+rw-mediainfo

You can try growisofs to burn the media using the terminal:

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=image.iso
