Grub 2 is now modular, and the .mod files are loaded as needed or manually with the (grub) insmod command.

See:

http://www.coreboot.org/Talk:GRUB2#GRUB2_modules

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#Images

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#insmod

From the second link

*.mod

Everything else in GRUB resides in dynamically loadable modules. These are often loaded automatically, or built into the core image if they are essential, but may also be loaded manually using the insmod command (see insmod).

Example, boot windows , see all the insmod lines ?

menuentry "Microsoft Windows 7 BIOS-MBR" {
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod ntfs
    insmod search_fs_uuid
    insmod ntldr
    search --fs-uuid --no-floppy --set=root 69B235F6749E84CE
    ntldr (${root})/bootmgr
}
