Since wifi isn't working on my machine with the fedora 24 live system I would like to keep my old fedora as a back up system when installing a new one. How can I achieve this?

How about upgrading your old fedora? What do you need a live system for?

simple just use the anaconda partition manager to create a new partition layout in the free space available when prompted, once loaded you will have a choice at boot prompt as to which one you wish to use. :)

you can back up an old system and just use the graphical software interface to upgrade from 26-27,last time I used the cmd line this time I tried out the software update and all went smooth no loss of data or settings. :)

If you wish to keep the old system as well as update to the new one or you wish to dual boot with windows and keep the old system you can use a partition manager to create spce on disk with multiple partitions and have boot priority switchable on boot if doing a windows dual boot always load the windows on first. :)
