Ask Fedora: What features / changes do we need in Askbot to make this site *really* work?

This is a followup of sorts to Ask Fedora: Is it working, and what's the future?, where as of this writing the top-voted answer comes from the upstream author of Askbot, asking us to keep up with Askbot and to wait for improvements (with which he is willing to help).

I have a list of things I think are important, and I'm going to add those as answers. Please vote up the ones you like, and add suggestions of your own. And, of course, feel free to answer as well.

To be clear, this isn't meant as a list of demands — it should be a useful, prioritized list of things we need which we will try to get help with — from upstream, from the infrastructure team, from the community of people who have worked on Ask Fedora, and from the open source world at large.

@mattdm: May I ask you what the status with this question and all 33 answers submitted by the user community is? Is there any active development on the Askbot software?

@florian the askbot application has been slowly developed since they only have around 1-2 devs fully submitting code. It has been harder to work with and keep things updated. Specially with everything being changed to python3 and askbot only supports python2. I recommend we continue looking into using discourse since its a fully developed forum application that its maintained by tons of devs.

Whatever you come up with, it need to be intuitive to those logging into the site, not scurried away in some obscure location

Implement/improve caching. The site currently has a very low response time. Unfortunately I don't know much about Django servers(I'm a PHP SE myself), so I can't give any suggestions.

I know Disqus used varnish and it was very successful for them.

How about a minor feature? The web page should return to where the user was after reading a thread. In other words, one scrolls down the main page and finds a thread to read. Click the link and read the thread. Hit the back button to return to the main page. When you do this it brings you to the top of the page. It would be nice if you were brought back to "where you were". (at the link you clicked to read a thread).

The recently introduces new tagging system does not work so well. Too many new questions receive the tag meta that are not meta questions. Too many questions receive all available tags (howto, please explain, and troubleshooting) of the first category - that is not helpful, or even counterproductive. Also, the distinction is unclear: A question can actually be all three but what do we need this for then? (I have a problem here (troubleshooting), *please explain me how to fix xyz).

Free tagging didn't work, the current tagging seems questionable, maybe we should think about removing tagging altogether.

Disallow creating of new tags.

I don't see how tags are useful on this ask forum. Removing tags entirely would maybe be to radical but I would like to suggest that users cannot easily add tags - or that addition of tags is moderated.

Related upstream issues: Feature request: minimum karma for creating new tags #564 and add support for renaming tags & adding tag synonyms from web (the latter allowing the community to clean up and manage the tags).

Alternately, there is an option to disable user creation of tags and allow them only to be selected from an admin-created "category tree". I'm open to the idea of deleting all existing tags and creating a much narrower, tailored tree. Once we have a Meta site, let's raise this as a separate issue. :)

Ugh, no — as currently implemented, that probably won't work. The "category tree" is a three-tier hierarchy, where picking a tag in the left column adds that tag and then opens a new list in the middle column of tags enabled by having that tag, and then selecting a tag from a middle column does the same for the last column. I don't think that will work for us.

I think we'd want the ability to tag all questions with Fedora version (possibly mandatory). Then, I see two big "top level" categories: troubleshooting and how-do-i questions (one of these mandatory). As a pipe dream, I'd _automatically_ archive troubleshooting posts after six months of non-activity (no answers, no edits, no votes, nothing marked as duplicates of it). Third, and probably not mandatory, Fedora Edition or Spin. And, finally, a few dozen general tags around areas of interest and expertise (gaming, graphics, hardware, networking systems-administration, webservers, programming...)

Anyway, all that for future Meta discussion :)

To the existing three categories all, unanswered, and followed, please add one category that displays Sticky posts. They are important to cover all those recurring questions that result in duplicated but Sticky posts are not really visible on the page

Adding tags to your question, it should be impossible to only add a tag of the first category (meta, trouble, howto, explain), without choosing a more specific tag of the second category.

Otherwise, we end up with too many questions that are tagged: howto, troubleshooting, please explain. But those alone are useless.

There is an option to choose tags from a three-level menu instead of a plain list, but the UI is a bit more complex.

I wish all answers would be displayed on a single page. Usually there aren't that many answers, if so, I'd be happy wait 1 sec to have the content loaded.

I can't find a configuration option for this.

Remove Post as a Wiki. (Done)

It serves no useful purpose, as the only way you can improve a question here is by adding information that only the original poster has. All it does is render it pointless to upvote the question because nobody gets the karma boost, and it's usually used by very new posters who could best benefit by such a boost.

Yes! I also dislike it for answers, because it tends to lead to unmaintained answers which no one feels ownership of. I was going to add this too, but it turns out it's an existing checkbox setting. I'm going to go ahead and uncheck it, unless anyone has a really good counter-argument.

I was seriously considering posting this as a [meta] question, but this saves the bother.

When displaying unanswered questions, remove the option to sort them by answers. That makes no sense!

List of Favourite Problems

Everybody could share own list of favourite questions or problems with Fedora by bookmarking questions and placing them into the Problems category. Problems can be resolved over time, so people also need ability to mark problems as resolved after some Fedora release.
