I have installed Fedora onto my Win7 machine,. Sadly I don't recognise much of the language fedora uses though I am competent with Windows. I don't understand the Fedora naming conventions and can make little sense of the Linux argument strategy, and thought I had seen the last of force feeding a Command Line Interpreter. I have downloaded the NVidia drivers for my Card GTX770 but am at a loss as to how to invoke the drivers. Anyone care to point me to an english version of the installation instruction please???

Installing Nvidia propietary drivers is posible but it is not an easy task specially if you do not much about Linux, Fedora load open source nvidia driver call noveau which is what you should have.

The easy way to install propietary drivers is flowing rpmfusion.org instructions and pacakages you need to install rpmfusion.org free and nonfree repositories to install nvidia here is the info https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia

Good luck

You have three options for drivers:

  • Nouveau
  • RPM Fusion
  • NVIDIA (proprietary)

Nouveau is the default driver and should already be configured for you. Other answers have addressed the RPM Fusion driver, so I will ignore that.

If you would like to use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, then I suggest that you carefully read and follow this guide. You do NOT have to reinstall the proprietary NVIDIA drivers with every kernel update as long as you properly configure dynamic kernel module support (DKMS), as detailed in the guide. However, you WILL have to reboot with graphics disabled in order to run the installer.

thanks for the reply. I do not see nouveau in my list of process names... Has it failed to install?

Welcome to ask.fedora. If you've downloaded the installer from nVidia, and haven't used it, get rid of it right now! The drivers are badly packaged and have to be installed again every time you update the Linux kernel. Once you've done that, add the rpmfusion repositories as described at the rpmfusion website. After that, you can install the proper drivers by following these instructions. Yes, this part is done in a terminal, not through a GUI, but it's all straight forward, and the instructions are simple. Once you've done that, reboot, and your new drivers will be working. And, this way your drivers will get updated at the same time as your kernel does, with no need for you to do anything.

BTW, although you can run Linux without ever using a terminal (many people do) it doesn't hurt to learn how to use one. Not only is it helpful in an emergency, there are many things that are actually easier and faster that way once you know your way around.

The proprietary drivers do not have to be reinstalled with every kernel update IF you use dynamic kernel module support.
