2018-03-08 23:25:05 -0600 answered a question Cut command is not working as expected.

You have to specify a delimiter for the field separation. The default delimiter is Tab and from man cut.

-f, --fields=LIST
select only these fields; also print any line that contains no delimiter character, unless the -s option is specified

So, as your sample.txt does not include a Tab the whole line is printed. If you add -s to your command, nothing would be printed.

To get the second field of your sample.txt as it is, use the command as follows.

cut -d ' ' -f 2 sample.txt

But I am still wondering why you would expect dog to be printed.

To use the default delimiter Tab you would have to generate the file as follows to add Tab delimiters between the words.

echo -e 'The\tquick\tbrown;\tfox\tjumps\tover\tthe\tlazy\tdog' > sample.txt

2018-02-25 11:07:02 -0600 commented question Microcode intel

It looks like you already have installed the latest revision 0x22 for your CPU which is shipped in the 20171117 package. There is a newer release 20180108, but that one is considered to cause problems. You should open a second question concerning your actual problem as this seems to be a x-y-problem, since you said something about problems with gnome.

2018-02-25 04:26:47 -0600 commented question Microcode intel

According to here the dd method is outdated and does not work anymore. There are also the valid options described. Which CPU do you want to upgrade? Check in /proc/cpuinfo. AFAIK the latest available microcode does introduce stability issues and it is not advised to install that one. In my case microcode_ctl-2.1-20.fc26 was reported by the spectre-meltdown-checker having stability issues.

2018-02-24 09:22:30 -0600 answered a question dnf output problem on group-installing 'compiz' in live user!

Since you are on a LIve USB environment, the root filesystem is read-only. Trying to install things on the other hand needs modifications on the root filesystem.

There are ways to add some persistent storage to a Live USB environment, but I have never tested that. You can read through here.

2018-02-24 09:15:51 -0600 answered a question update fedora

As steveeey already mentioned, it is no problem to install a different desktop on top of your installation without the need of a complete reinstall.

To install the needed packages run the command as follows, which should install the Cinnamon desktop and all required dependencies. Run the command either as user root or prefix them with sudo

dnf groupinstall "Cinnamon Desktop"

An alternative to install a group with dnf is as follows.

dnf install @"Cinnamon Desktop"

When the install is done, logout or reboot and you should be able to select the Cinnamon desktop in the login screen.

2018-02-17 10:05:28 -0600 commented answer Undertand information about nvidia drivers , supported chips etc

For VDPAU and concerning PCI IDs, taken from here: It is used in various programs (e.g., The PCI Utilities) to display full human-readable names instead of cryptic numeric codes.

2018-02-17 05:13:33 -0600 answered a question Undertand information about nvidia drivers , supported chips etc

Will try to answer the questions inline.

On rpmfusion , how we can check which series is recommended for my card?.

In the Current GeForce/Quadro/Tesla of the RPMFusoin link it is stated This driver is suitable for any GPU found in 2010 and later. If that matches your hardware, go for this option.
I must admit it is not very clear and one needs to know some details about the hardware.

What "supported chips" means?. Is it about the chip inside the graphic card?.

The content of this link is provided by Nvidia and lists all supported Nvidia graphics cards for a specific driver version, in this case 367.57. The second column shows the PCI ID of the card which identifies the hardware. With lspci these IDs are normally translated into human readable text, but the PCI ID should show up if your enter the command as follows.

lspci -n -s 01:00.0

So, yes this is about the chip inside the graphics card.

What means a full reboot?

Hm, well, it means reboot of your PC going through BIOS and loading the new kernel and initramfs. I guess some people might only hibernate or similar.

Based on the above information and from nvidia website I know my series is GeForce 600 . Now, how this information is useful?

As already mentioned above, the RPMFusion site does not very clearly outline the graphics card versions and is very confusing.

Maybe best would be to lookup the latest driver version at nvidia.com directly. Then double check the version that is provided by RPMFusion.
There is also a good Fedora Nvidia Guide which does not make use of RPMFusion.
Depending on your needs it might work better?

2018-02-15 00:03:25 -0600 answered a question pam_unix.so nullok - why is this default?

This is maybe because the setting as deployed by Fedora fits for most use cases. Some advanced users might want to disable this behavior and normally feel comfortable editing the needed files with an editor or sed or use a configuration management to the adopt systems to their needs.
A quick online search for the nullok lead me mostly to threads about hardening a Linux system, which is not what every user does or wants. Just indications and things may change over time, RHEL7 and ArchLinux uses nullok, Ubuntu uses nullok_secure ( funny ), so far the systems I have access to. So this is not Fedora specific.

Second, IMO the password store should already take care of the password entries and enforce a password that must not be NULL and match a given password quality. I also just tried to set an empty password as normal user with passwd on a Fedora 26 which was not possible as it seems to be restricted. So to set an empty password you need root access and manually change things to allow passwd to accept empty passwords or modify /etc/shadow directly. root users should know what they are doing.
In larger environments you normally use something like LDAP for user information and password store and enforce a password policy in the LDAP backend.

I am afraid the link has vanished for the 32-bit version of the Live media. Link is dating back to 2018-01-17, whereas in the download repo the oldest is 2018-01-20.

2018-02-04 03:00:26 -0600 answered a question Can anyone give the full iso for 32-bit Fedora 27 without netinstall, please

According to the announce site of Fedora 27, there is no support for the 32-bit Live ISO media anymore. You might be lucky and find one in one of the spins or alternate downloads which are linked in the announce site.

You also might to close this post and react on a topic that already discusses this. Would help to find people with your problem.
