From Windows days, I understand that typically an application needs to be closed before it can be updated by another (newer) version. But, when I run dnf update in Fedora, it does not seem to require applications to be closed or complain at all that they are open. So, how does Fedora (or Linux in general) update apps that are in use without closing them first?

2017-12-28 09:50:51 -0500 asked a question How to Use My Fedora Laptop as A Monitor for Android TV Box

I want to connect an Android TV box to my laptop which is running Fedora 26. I want to use the laptop as display for the box. How can I do that? Currently, when I connect the device via VGA port (using an HDMI to VGA connector), the laptop (Acer E5-773) thinks that it is a second monitor. It does not know it is supposed to be an input. Is there a way I can configure the laptop display to act as display for the the TV box or both the box and the system display (splitting the display area or something?!)?
The Android device is X96, running Android 6. It has a couple of USB ports, and also IR, AV, HDMI, DC, and OPTICAL ports.

2017-11-02 00:57:03 -0500 asked a question The blank screen recording problem on Gnome Wayland

I am unable to record screen on Gnome (Fedora 26). My system specs:
Acer Aspire E5-17 Core i5-6200u RAM‌: 8 GB No dedicated GPU

I have tried SimpleScreenRecorder, VokoScreen, and VLC Media Player. All record blank screen with voice. The Gnome extension, EasyScreenCast , works though, which adds a record icon on top of the screen where you can manage it. The downside to using it, however, is that it has limited options and you do not seem to be able to set recording parameters like frame rate, bit rate, etc. Does anyone know what the blank recording is caused by on Fedora 26 Workstation?

2017-10-16 10:22:41 -0500 asked a question Common application shortcuts do not work on Gnome

I am running gnome-shell 3.24.3 on Fedora Workstation 26. I installed this Fedora earlier last week on the new SSD drive I'd bought. My problem is that common application shortcuts like Ctrl+S and Ctrl+P for LMMS and R and Shift+R for Audacity are not working. I have never experienced this before. I logged out and logged back in using Gnome on Xorg and Gnome Classic. The issue persists. I switched to XFCE but I found it too uncomfortable to work with, like a broken house you need to put pieces on for basic things to work. I love Gnome and I hope someone can give me a hint on how to solve this issue.

2017-10-12 00:28:35 -0500 asked a question Is adding beta and RC rpms allowed on Fedora?

I am going to start creating rpm packages for Fedora and add them to Fedora repos. There are applications that have beta and RC releases. Given that such applications often have changed drastically from their old release which is probably already in Fedora repositories, can I compile and add such beta and alpha and RC versions? Is this allowed on Fedora?

2017-08-18 12:38:39 -0500 marked best answer Why did grub change after running "sudo dnf update"?

I am using Fedora 22. Well, I ran "sudo dnf update" in gnome-terminal and let it download and install what seemed to be update of existing packages. In the next boot-up of the system, I noticed a change in grub, with a new entry added. Formerly, there were only two Fedora entries besides my Windows partitions and now I see another added. I am not sure which one is new. Link to related screenshot follows:

http://s6.picofile.com/file/826009389...

The first grub menu item is: Fedora (4.4.13-200.fc22.x86_x64) 22 (Twenty Two)
The second is: : Fedora (4.0.4-301.fc22.x86_x64) 22 (Twenty Two)

I know one of these two items is new, and appeared after I executed "sudo dnf update", but do not know which and why. It is noteworthy that when I select the first item in the menu with apparently higher version, the boot-up screen is a progressing bar like this, and then the display is 1024x768 px (huge) instead of the usual 1920x1080 resolution. Does anyone know what this change is all about?
