External monitor error after dnfdragora upgrading Cinnamon yesterday

Yesterday dnfdragora upgraded several items. I saw the list showing a lot of things concerning Cinnamon.
Before shutting down the computer I let dnfdragora update all of those, then I went to bed.

This morning, turning on is ok:

But after entering password:

Clicking mouse on the monitor, the desktop flickers:

Trying Firefox:

I unplugged the external monitor, the notebook monitor is ok:

I plugged external monitor again, it’s ok.

I tried shutting down and turning on for many times.
I had to unplug and plug in every time.

Help me please :flushed:

Looks like the update introduced a regression. Would be good to find out what packages got updated and then file a bug against the one that causes the error.

sudo dnf history info last

tells you more about the last transaction. sudo dnf history info last-1 for the previous one and so on. sudo dnf history info 25 for transaction no. 25.

sudo dnf history

gives you the whole history of transactions.

Use

 sudo dnf history undo last

to undo the last transaction. If that fixes the problem, update the packages one by one and check which one introduces the error (or if you post a list of updates packages, we may be able to tell which one could cause this behaviour).

[root@localhost fedora002]#

Bunch of cinnamon updates, no idea which one is responsible.

I took a very brief look on the Cinnamon bug tracker (assuming this is the right one), and it looks like this bug has been reported. Subscribe to the bug to get updates on fixing the issue or temporary workarounds.

Do you know how to install this updated package from https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=46474086?

Can you please teach me ?

Hi afdrnk

To get the update from koji, go to the page with the fix you need, which is https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=1536638

Your dnf history shows that you need only this file:

cinnamon-desktop-4.6.2-2.fc32.x86_64.rpm

So go to the x86_64 section and this file is the first in the list of four. Click on the ‘download’ link and save the file to, say, your desktop.

To install, go to a terminal, get root privileges (sudo or su), and type:

dnf upgrade /home/MYNAME/Desktop/cinnamon-desktop-4.6.2-2.fc32.x86_64.rpm

Of course, replace ‘MYNAME’ with the correct path.

It’s probably best to reboot afterwards to make sure it’s applied properly, though logging out and back in is probably ok.

You can delete the downloaded file on your desktop.

Thank you so much, the problem is gone.
Is it possible if this package will be added to the upcoming version of Fedora Workstation ?

Yes, this package is working its way through the system. Note that this affects only the Cinnamon Spin (Fedora Workstation=GNOME, not Cinnamon). It was actually an upstream problem and not caused by the Fedora maintainer.

The package is now listed in bodhi (https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2020-f2738e4da2) - you can get more info on how bodhi works here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bodhi
If you log in to bodhi (it’s the same login as for this website) and leave ‘karma’, you’ll be doing your fellow Fedora-users a favour - unless someone tests packages, bugs like this will get through.

Note that in this case, the maintainer has set ‘Stable by Karma = 1’ which is very unusual (usually it’s 3) but this is a very simple fix. So if just one person leaves (positive) karma, the fix will get pushed to the stable repository so that everyone will get it within a day or so rather than having to wait a week (‘days to stable = 7’ which is how long to wait before stable if no one leaves karma).

Glad you got the problem sorted.
