You are doing a reinstall.

What file system was in use with the prior install?
How are you attempting to install? Auto configure?, custom?, blivet gui custom?

What file system are you trying to use now?
Are you repartitioning the drive or using existing partitions?

I am having the same problem, and I am stuck on Anaconda partition GUI.

My scenario is:

  • Trying to reinstall F34
  • / and /home are existing Btrfs volumes
  • I want to preserve /home but reformat all the other volumes/partitions (/, /boot and /boot/efi)
  • I can assign /boot , /boot/efi and /home to “new” installation, but when I try to assign / , this “You must create a new file system on the root device” appears

Any help will be much appreciated.

PS: IMHO Anaconda should handle this situation automatically, or at least communicate properly what needs to be done. I hope this has improved on F35

Simple enough. That is telling you you need to reformat it. Thus deleting the existing subvolume and recreating it is not an issue for a new install
