Fedora 34 USB headset speaker stops working after some time

I installed Fedora 34 WorkStation today on my Dell XPS 9550 (2016). I am using Sennheiser PC 8 USB headset that has a microphone. The headset speakers stop producing sound after some time whereas the microphone keeps working. If I log out and log in again, the headset speakers start working again. Even when the headset speakers stop working, the laptop speakers continue working. How can I avoid re-login? Is there a way to “refresh” the list of audio devices connected? Just plugging out and plugging the USB headset back does not work.

Can you please go through your system logs to see what errors you see?

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/viewing-logs/

Can you also please post the output of this command?

sudo fpaste --sysinfo --printonly

It may be a pipewire related issue. You should be able to restart pipewire without logging out using:

systemctl --user restart pipewire.service

Thank you very much for your prompt reply @ankursinha. I checked the logs. One suspicious thing that I found related to the headphones is

May 13 09:32:45 fedora pipewire-media-session[2504]: The decibel volume range for element 'Headphone' (-2837 dB - -6 dB) has negative maximum. Disabling the decibel range.

The output of the fpaste command is shown below:

I also suspected it to be a pipewire issue but I did not realize that pipewire has a daemon like pulseaudio. On restarting the pipewire service, the headphones start working again. It seems to be some kind of a bug but I don’t know what exactly it is or how to find it.

It could be a pipewire bug—it’s receiving frequent updates.

It’ll be good to first check the list of current issues also to see if one for yours is already filed.
