Fedora openssh-server and iPad SFTP connection problem

I have a Thinkpad T400 running Fedora 32 Mate 64-bit with openssh-server. I also have an iPad (5th gen) model number MP2F2LL/A (iPadOS 14.3, 32GB with 19GB available). On the iPad, I’ve installed two apps, Documents by Readdle and FTPManager to connect to the Thinkpad.

I can usually connect for a while, but sometimes if I go into a directory with lots of subdirectories or sometimes when I’m viewing a group of documents, the network connection will crash on the Thinkpad running Fedora. I can then disable and enable networking to get it working again but this will happen several times while I’m using it.

How do I fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

You’re saying this kills the network completely on the laptop? Or just the ssh connection?

What do you see in the logs (with journalctl) when this happens?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it kills the network on the laptop. I was listening to music from YouTube on the laptop once when this happened and the music stopped. I don’t see an error message with journalctl. Like, the network crashed at 2:53, I disabled and enabled networking at 2:54, and here’s the output from journalctl:

Weird. I would have expected at least something to be logged. Is this over wifi or ethernet? Can you explain your configuration further?

It’s WiFi. I didn’t modify the sshd_config file. There’s just the thinkpad, the iPad, and a WiFi router. I’ve tried two different WiFi routers and get this problem with both. After reading your first response, I tried stress testing it by quickly pulling up a lot of documents, and it worked perfectly. I think when I go off and do something else for a while and come back and pull up more documents, that’s when the thinkpad’s network crashes.

Oops, just listed sshd records from journalctl above. Here’s everything below, but I still don’t see any error messages for the network crash at 2:53 PM.

It looks like a Wi-Fi-specific issue.
This kind of problem can be difficult to diagnose and solve.
If you are lucky, changing Wi-Fi band/channel or upgrading the router’s firmware can help.
In the worst case, you need to replace the router and/or the wireless adapter, or set up an extra repeater, or use Ethernet on the server side.
Anyway, be ready to spend a lot of time isolating the problem through trial and error method.

I’m surprised to not see anything logged, but I wonder if it’s related to power-saving features, with the wifi going to sleep and not waking properly.

I was wrong about going off and coming back. The last two times I’ve produced the error were right after I booted up the thinkpad. Could be iPad power saving related, but I’m amazed it crashes the thinkpad’s network. Reminds me of the ping of death.

Oh, I was thinking power saving issues on the ThinkPad. But I’m kind of just guessing without logs. So I think the next step would be to increase the log level. These docs are for RHEL 8 but should apply just as well to recent Fedora releases: Introduction to NetworkManager Debugging: Debugging levels and domains.

Many thanks. Will try that out.

Here’s a tests. Again, I only have this network trouble when I connect to it with my iPad. And instead of crashing the network, like I was thinking before, looks like it’s filling up some queues.
