Fingerprint reader on thinkpad t580

Dear fedora users,
I recently got a new (for me) thinkpad t580. Everything works almost fine.
I can’t figure out how if I can get the fingerprint reader working or not.
This is the output from lsusb command:

$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:0316 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Card Reader
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
**Bus 001 Device 004: ID 06cb:009a Synaptics, Inc. Metallica MIS Touch Fingerprint Reader**
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 5986:2113 Acer, Inc SunplusIT Integrated Camera
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0a2b Intel Corp. Bluetooth wireless interface
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I guess I have no chance. It is not supported by fprintd.
I found this project, but seems to me it is outdated:

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Paolo

I have similar laptop (E480) and fingerprint sensor doesn’t work either. But I have no idea how to set it up.

It seems to me to going back of years when you have to working a lot to get your hardware to work under linux…

Newer hardware → newer drivers → delay in receiving the driver and enabling the hardware.

You are correct, this is similar to the early days of fedora but only for totally new items and not for almost the whole machine.

If we could convince manufacturers to provide drivers for linux out of the box this would not happen. Instead we are stuck with developers having to reverse engineer the drivers after the hardware is released, instead of having the advantage of MS with the drivers developed and released before the hardware is shipped.
