  • unknows display in Settings
  • GDM screen has more space horizontally

After install rpm nvidia drivers 390 the resolution changes to more space horizontally, the GDM and the Desktop screen. Other thing is settings shows an Unknow display.

I reset the resolution of the monitor to 1920x1080, that fixed the problem of the Desktop screen and the GDM.
Now only the GDM has more space horizontally only when turn on the PC, after log in both screen are fixed.

You do not say anything about what DE you are using (wayland or xorg). With the 390 driver I assume it is xorg since wayland did not work with that driver.

You also did not say anything about whether you have one monitor or 2, though the display settings panel shows possibly 2. One is a 24" viewsonic and the other is Unknown.

You did not say if this is a laptop or a desktop.

I see similar improper display configs with my laptop and an external monitor when I try using wayland but things work properly with xorg… I have an intel + GTX 1660 dual GPU config in my laptop and of course have the newer 510 driver that does support wayland.

One thing to check is whether your login is using the default wayland DE or if you are using xorg. That can be selected/set during login at the password screen using the gear icon in the lower right corner. Using that 390 driver you most assuredly should be using the xorg DE.

  • xorg , sellected in the GDM , before install nvidia drivers from RPM fusion repository
  • Have only one monitor.
    • the ViewSonic, DVI-I-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 521mm x 293mm
  • Desktop

So it seems that maybe the problem is the GPU you have. Since it is old enough that it needs the 390 driver and has not been supported by nvidia for some time I would suggest that you update that GPU. Even the 390 driver is not fully supported by the newer kernels and DEs though tweaks have been done to allow it to compile.

Well, I am wanting to upgrade my DE for a long time.
