Hello
my new laptop has issue in touchpad… I tried cat /proc/bus/input/devices
and the system has installed the driver and even recognized it but the touchpad is not working

Can anyone help me in making this touchpad work

Hi, it seems that kernel 5.11 will come with a fix:

You can wait for it or open bug report asking for back-porting of missing patch to kernel 5.10.
There’s an upcoming Kernel 5.11 test week, so in a couple of days first F33 builds should be available on koji:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2021-03-08_Kernel_5.11_Test_Week

Is this sure that I will have that problem fixed…?
And thank you so much for that suggestion I think I will sleep well after knowing that I won’t have to carry my bulky mouse everywhere… :joy:

From linked bug report it looks that way, people there tested it already (there are clues on how to do that).

I’m just an IT guy and often issues resolve themselves when I arrive, I’m sure that with superadmin powers you can move the cursor with sheer power of the mind

On a serious note, if my answer turns out right, mark it as a solution.

:joy: Hello @ozeszty I tried to fix the issue but it all remain the same all the time…i.e the touchpad doesnot work…I’ve created the bugzilla report and no replies from them…as well…sorry I cannot mark the solution for the topic since my problem is still not fixed :pensive:…but when I solve it with your suggestion I will mark it along with my additional ways to do it… :love_you_gesture:
Have a great day…

I have this same problem when I updated to kernel 5.10.19 (with 5.10.18 touchpad works fine).

Here’s hoping it’s fixed in 5.11 (although that bug report is for a MSFT touchpad and mine is ELAN0511 Touchpad).

It’s a different issue, open new topic with more details. Look for differences between e.g. dmesg or cat /proc/bus/input/devices output on both kernels.

This is what it shows when I do dmesg…

Can you help me…

My last answer was for Eduardo.
You can already test 5.11 kernel by booting iso from test day wiki or by installing it from koji:
cd $(mktemp -d) && koji download-build --arch=x86_64 kernel-5.11.3-50.fc33 && dnf upgrade *

My issue might have been different than of the original submitter of the question, but I figured I might as well try installing the 5.11 kernel from koji with the instruction you posted, and it fixed my touchpad, it’s working fine now! Thank you very much!

Great, until 5.11 is rolled out to Fedora 33 updates repository, every couple of days look here for newer .fc33 builds and install them: kernel | Package Info | koji

Will do, thank you again!

I would like to install only the stable release of kernel because this is the third time I have formatted my laptop because of some tweak that I did and booting failed with something on the screen… I didn’t know what was I supposed to do…
Can you give me guides on how to become familiar with these things… I am very new to linux and I don’t know anything about it…
And do you know when will kernel core 5.11 be launched…?

Probably in ~2 weeks.
If you install that kernel from koji, in case it causes issues, during system start-up you’ll still be able to boot two previous kernels and remove 5.11.

In case like that it’s best to either ask the source of tweak you tried, find something about error message or post here what steps were made, what instruction was followed and what’s the end result (error message).

If you’re about to tinker with your system, have a bootable pendrive with system you’re using, it can be very helpful in troubleshooting and fixing the issue. Here are updated ISOs Index of /pub/alt/live-respins

If you used default partitioning during Fedora 33 installation, get familiar with BTRFS snapshots, they’ll let you revert system to previous state.

There’s no universal and complete source of knowledge, everything changes quite fast, different distributions vary. Reading some fresh book and then learning more as you go (finding solutions, reading questions and answers here) should be effective.
